Urgewald – Following the Money

When nature is destroyed, climate goals ignored, and human rights violated, major finance is also involved. This is where we intervene.
Since 1992, we shine a light on the financing behind harmful projects. Our award-winning documentary shows how a handful of activists laid the foundations of Urgewald around the kitchen table in a shared apartment over 30 years ago and how it grew from a small local association into an internationally recognized organization with global impact.

After a successful launch and cinema tour in October 2024, the film has been screened at many more theaters — and even on living-room walls, in clubhouses and yoga studios. Current screening dates are available on this page.

Urgewald documentary wins audience award at the Five Lakes Film Festival 2024

Our film is now award-winning. At the 18th Five Lakes Film Festival in Gauting, Bavaria, audiences named Following the Money the winner in the “Horizons” category. The film was honored for promoting peace, freedom, justice, gender equality, and harmony between humans and nature. Director Peter Wejdling accepted the award from festival director Matthias Helwig at the closing ceremony in Starnberg — and we couldn’t be more thrilled!

Berlin premiere: Urgewald documentary in theaters

Text by Protect the Planet, October 11, 2024

On October 9, the Urgewald documentary officially kicked off its 2024 cinema tour at the Kant-Kino in Berlin. Together with Urgewald founder Heffa Schücking, director Peter Wejdling, and the Urgewald team, we enjoyed an unforgettable screening.

Protect the Planet, the Sick Environmental Foundation, and the Elektrizitätswerke Schönau (EWS) supported the tour following the preview event in Munich, celebrating and sharing 30 years of Urgewald.

Audience reactions were strong — applause, murmurs, laughter. The film is a powerful tool to highlight the pressing issues of today: human rights, environmental protection, and the climate crisis.

“Urgewald is one of the most successful environmental organizations because it challenges the biggest players: the banks. Urgewald exposes how much money still flows into fossil fuels — energy that ultimately destroys our planet. This must stop.”
— Dorothea Sick-Thies, Founder of Protect the Planet

Preview Event in Munich – July 15, 2024

More than 150 people attended the preview screening hosted by Protect the Planet and Urgewald. The line stretched outside the Sendlinger Tor Cinema. During the post-screening discussion, noted climate lawyer Roda Verheyen praised the documentary:

“It is incredibly important to convey abstract concepts like financial flows in capital markets in an emotional way. This film does that. We have to keep it up!”

We thank Protect the Planet, the Sick Environmental Foundation, the Elektrizitätswerke Schönau (EWS) and W-Film for the great collaboration, and we look forward to working together for a sustainable future. Together we achieve more!

Successful First Screening in Warendorf

The very first public screening took place on December 16, 2023, at the Scala Filmtheater. After welcome remarks from Mayor Peter Horstmann and Hedwig Tarner from Urgewald’s board, the audience dove into 30 years of urgewald history. The film received a standing ovation. Team members took audience questions afterward. The conversations about Urgewald’s past and future continued in the café and foyer.
