As Australia and Türkiye prepare to co-host COP 31 in Antalya, Urgewald released the annual update of the “Global Coal Exit List” (GCEL). GCEL is the most comprehensive public database of companies operating across the thermal coal value chain, covering more than 1,500 parent companies and 1,150 subsidiaries. Currently, 717 financial institutions use GCEL to monitor and restrict financing for the thermal coal industry. 

Alexander Kirk, sanctions campaigner at Urgewald, said:

“Republicans and Democrats passed this law in Lindsey Graham’s name to squeeze Russia’s war revenues. Trump has now hollowed it out before its main sanctions could bite. That is a betrayal of the bipartisan effort behind this law and a lifeline to Putin."

A fourth Russia-linked Arctic LNG tanker is heading for Denmark’s Fayard shipyard, where the yard is simultaneously repairing a Danish naval frigate. The visit comes days after new US legislation expanded sanctions powers covering vessels transporting Russian LNG, while new analysis suggests four Arc7 maintenance visits this summer could support around a decade of combined vessel operation.
