Responding to the result of Hungary’s election, campaigners are urging the incoming government to move quickly to ratify the EU’s 20th sanctions package against Russia, which EU leaders have said should be adopted swiftly. The package is expected to deepen pressure on the Kremlin by targeting Russia’s energy revenues, banking system, and shadow fleet operations. Hungary under Viktor Orbán had blocked the package, which requires unanimity across the EU.
Alexander Kirk, Sanctions Campaigner at Urgewald, said:
“Tonight is a huge win for Ukraine and for Europe. Orbán’s defeat is Putin’s defeat too.
"For too long, Hungary under Orbán has held back tougher EU action on Russia. The EU must now move quickly to finalise its 20th sanctions package, aimed at further cutting Russia’s energy revenues, constraining its banking system, and tightening pressure on the shadow fleet. We urge the incoming Hungarian government to ratify it as soon as possible and help restore a united European front against Russian aggression."
