A protest by a broad civil society alliance will take place in front of the Siemens Energy Annual General Meeting in Berlin on Thursday. The nine participating organizations and groups criticize the company's sprawling business with gas turbines and Siemens Energy's activities in conflict regions and autocratically governed states. Participating in the protest are: Fridays for Future, Deutsche Umwelthilfe, Urgewald, Beyond Fossil Fuels, Dachverband der kritischen Aktionärinnen und Aktionäre, Gaswende, GegenStrömung, PowerShift, Parents for Future.

Siemens Energy is a global leader on the market for fossil gas turbines. The company also supplies French oil multinational TotalEnergies’ controversial Mozambique LNG project with gas turbines and compressors. At the end of January, TotalEnergies officially reopened the devastating project in northern Mozambique after repeated terrorist attacks in the region had halted it for several years.

Urgewald and local partner groups criticize TotalEnergies for ignoring the rapidly deteriorating security situation and thus endangering local communities. Serious human rights allegations in connection with the project have not yet been clarified. A criminal complaint was recently filed against TotalEnergies for allegedly aiding and abetting war crimes in connection with the project. [1] TotalEnergies denies the allegations. Complaints from surrounding communities that were resettled have also not yet been properly addressed in many cases.

Sonja Meister, energy campaigner at Urgewald, says: "So far, Siemens Energy's pursuit of profit seems to be more important than the consequences for people on the ground. The company must put an end to fossil fuel related activities that endanger human rights and threaten our climate future. For starters, it must stop supplying gas turbines for the disastrous Mozambique LNG project immediately."

A new report by Deutsche Umwelthilfe (DUH) shows that Siemens Energy continues to do extensive business with fossil gas turbines in authoritarian and conflict-ridden states. The analysis "Turbines for Tyrants" documents projects in Belarus, Saudi Arabia, Turkmenistan, Azerbaijan and Iran, among others, and points to considerable human rights risks and a consolidation of fossil dependencies.

Constantin Zerger, Head of Energy and Climate Protection at Deutsche Umwelthilfe, says: "Siemens Energy is expanding its fossil fuel business in countries where human rights are systematically violated. The company must finally align its international business practices with climate and human rights standards. This also means withdrawing from fossil fuel projects."

At the same time, Siemens Energy enables the global expansion of fossil gas infrastructure, including in connection with AI data centers and especially in the USA (briefing on the topic linked below). Moritz Leiner, Energy Campaigner at Urgewald, comments: "With all-inclusive packages for gas-powered data centers, Siemens Energy is exacerbating fossil fuel dependency worldwide. Instead of consistently promoting sustainable and renewable energy systems, the company is consolidating the fossil status quo."

Siemens Energy is also hoping to win contracts through the tenders for 8 Gigawatts of new gas-fired power plant capacity as part of the German government's current "power plant strategy". New gas-fired power plants mean additional fossil fuel load and a delay in Germany's energy transition, which is already lagging far behind.

Nele Evers from Fridays for Future says: "Siemens Energy is doing everything it can to maintain its dirty fossil fuel business with gas turbines and power plants. The company takes on more and more fossil dependencies and fires up the climate crisis. Instead of continuing to lobby for short-term profits, Siemens Energy must now decidedly shift focus towards renewable energies."
