Germanwatch and Urgewald are organizing a one-day symposium to address the future of the World Bank’s development mandate against the backdrop of geopolitical pressures. While the current energy crisis again demonstrates the importance of phasing out fossil fuels, the climate agenda at the World Bank Group is under pressure despite massive financing needs. Coupled with recent developments regarding the Bank’s independent accountability mechanisms, this leads to questions around strategies for progressive reforms that safeguard high quality development projects. How can the World Bank Group credibly implement its development mandate? What role can Germany and Europe play in preventing a rollback of environmental and social standards? What new alliances can be formed to strengthen the World Bank Group’s role in delivering its development mandate, including the just energy transition and climate finance?
The symposium will bring together World Bank Group management, shareholder representatives, members of the German parliament and civil society representatives to discuss upcoming windows of opportunity such as the 2026 Annual Meetings, the review of IFC
Performance Standards and the upcoming IDA replenishment.
